Hawaii Day 2
We booked this trip through Pleasant Holidays and on Day 2 they offered a complimentary full American breakfast and some freebies while they presented different activities. We decided to skip this and explore on our own, but we almost missed the complimentary continental breakfast downstairs which ended at 8:30AM. After breakfast we headed down to the beach to do some surfing!
Unfortunately I don't have any pictures. We weren't sure whether to go at first because the waves seemed pretty small but we decided to go for it and rented some longboards. This was my first time surfing and it was a lot of fun because I was able to catch two waves! At first I kept falling but I did better after Annie told me to get up more slowly. She said she caught a wave too but I missed it. I'm glad we didn't take surf lessons because 1) we didn't need them and 2) we saw some people that did and it was basically the instructor pushing their boards forward when the wave came and yelling at them to stand up. This doesn't really teach you because you don't learn to paddle. After about an hour and a half we turned back in. The cool thing about the rentals was that they rounded down on the time so we only paid for an hour's worth.
On a side note, I should have bought a rash guard and would recommend anyone else that tries surfing to do the same. Even though we had the soft top longboards there was still chafing from sliding on and off and my stomach area was very red by the time we were done, not to mention the pain in my nipples.
After a quick shower we headed back to the beach bar at the Westin for some lunch. We went all out on this one: fries, chicken wings, and a teriyaki burger (not pictured).
We were stuffed! Afterwards we checked out the shops again and then relaxed back at the hotel. Then we went to go find some malasadas at Leonard's. We'd heard so many rave reviews that we had to try it. Again, we only had a general idea of where it was and Google Maps shows this place was 1.5 miles away. I don't have a picture of the malasada we had but it was sort of like a sugar donut without the hole in the middle. That's it?! It was good, but not THAT good. I wasn't too impressed. Luckily we passed by Genki Sushi, a place that Annie's friend Jess had recommended. We stopped here for dinner. They had sushi boat without the boats, very reminiscent of Sushi Maru.
I liked the steamed egg (above). We were stuffed again (I sense a theme here) but we headed back to Leonard's to try one of their strawberry filled malasadas.
We ate this one back at the hotel. This didn't change my mind about them. Good, but don't understand the hype.

how much was the surf board rentals?? i think i told you that my friends and i had lessons, and they were good!! they didn't just push us, maybe because there were 5 of us, and only 2 teachers.
one main thing i remember about hawaii is all of the abc stores! they were everywhere. i bought sooo much stuff there....all of my souvenirs and most of my food! so we didn't really get to try out any restaurants. but we did go to a luau!
ok, can't wait for day 3!!! it better be up here soon...i'll give you until thursday!

The surf board rentals were $15 for the first hour and $5 each hour after. We rented from one of those stations on the beach that have a whole line of boards set up. We only stopped by the ABC stores for essentials like water and sunblock, although we were tempted to try the spam musubi! Hopefully I'll make your "deadline" for day 3. =)

Can I hear about more food???? You could have saved yourself the hassle of flying to Hawaii and just hit up the food court at the local mall!
