First Day of School

Today was the first day of orientation for my MBA program at Marshall. I got seven plus hours of sleep last night but was still dragging in the morning session. The afternoon wasn't as bad.

We were introduced to the faculty for our first year of classes and then went through some administrative material. What I got most out of today was confirming which core I was assigned to and in relation learning who would be my core mates for the first semester. Also, we had a guest speaker at dinner that I felt was rather inspiring. His name was Maynard Brown, a board member at Junior Achievement and a teacher at Crenshaw High School. He earned his MBA at the Johnson School at Cornell and was a banker until visiting Crenshaw High School, at which point he switched careers because he felt he could make more of a difference as a teacher. Some notable quotes from the evening:

"Your legacy will be the difference that you make, not the money that you have made."

"If not you, then who? If not now, then when will change come about?"

This focus on giving back at the end of the evening balanced out the events for the day and helped keep the bigger picture in perspective. Overall, a good first day of this new adventure.
