Review: The Help
I have a list of books I want to read but sometimes I forget to add to it and work from memory. There was a book that I wanted to read that was going to be made into a movie, which looking back I think was Water for Elephants but I got confused and ended up buying The Help by Kathryn Stockett on my iPad, which is also being made into a movie.
The book tells the story of the lives of maids in the South, specifically Jackson, Mississippi, set in the 1960s around the time of Martin Luther King's speech. While seemingly past the challenges of blatant violence between black and white, Stockett dispels this notion as she captures the existing fear of a group of maids that meet in secrecy in a daring plot to raise awareness of how they really feel about their roles and relationships.
The books is told from different first-person perspectives and moved quickly enough to keep my interest. While a good read, I felt that the ending was abrupt and didn't quite provide a satisfactory close.
My favorite line from the book: I always thought insanity would be a dark, bitter feeling, but it is drenching and delicious if you really roll around in it.

Because my Amazon Associates account was cancelled, my links no longer work so I'll try to at least post a cover image or a picture I've taken myself.
