Chasing the Bus

This morning I saw someone crossing the street, stopping to look over his shoulder. Turns out he was gauging a bus approach and had to shuffle-run his way a little further to make it. As the light turned green I saw that fortunately he did catch the bus.
This scene reminded me of the days when I would run after the bus back in college, with one specific instance coming to mind. It had just started raining as I left the library, and I saw a bus at the stop. I started running (which sucks when you are carrying a backpack) and slowed as I reached the back of the bus as it hadn't left yet. With only the length of the bus left it closes its doors and pulls away from the curb.
Being that this was on campus, I thought I could make it to the next stop even though it was about a quarter mile away. I start running as fast I can but the bus is putting more and more distance between us so I give up... until I see it slow down. So I start running again but I think you know where this story is going - I'm about ten seconds too slow and I watch the bus pull away from me again for a second time.
I forget how long the wait was for the next bus, but I'd had enough for the day and walked home in the rain.
